Starting a squishy collection: where to begin and how to store it

A squishy almost never stays on its own. You buy one to try it, you like the feel, and six months later there are twelve on a shelf. You may as well go about it sensibly from the start: here is how to build a collection that makes sense, without spending at random.

The rule of three textures

The classic beginner's mistake is buying five squishies that all feel alike. You end up with the same sensation five times over, and the interest fades fast.

The right foundation is one texture from each family:

• A slow rise — the foam that lifts back gently, the one you watch recover its shape. The most soothing gesture. Start with a large piece, the effect is far clearer: the giant XXL cheese or the jumbo banana.
• A gel to knead — indestructible, it takes everything and travels anywhere. The transparent mochi is the easiest one to start with.
• A stretchy one — the one you pull, twist and draw out. The maltose axolotl or the ocean cube.

Singles or packs?

Pick a thread

The most satisfying collections are not the biggest ones, they are the ones with a theme. A few angles that work well:

• By world — all food squishies, or all animals. Visually, the shelf looks far better than a random mix.
• By texture — one shelf for slow rise, one for gel, one for stretchy: handy for picking by mood, just like our Stress Relief Squishy collection.
• By colour — a pastel gradient or a transparent series, like the mochi and maltose.
• By size — from pencil-case mini to giant format, a gradient that always photographs well.

Storing them without damage

This is the part everyone neglects, and it is what decides how long a collection lasts.

1. Never stacked, never compressed. A foam squishy kept crushed under others eventually loses its return and stays deformed. Prefer an open shelf or a shallow tray.
2. Out of direct sunlight. UV yellows white foams and dulls pastel colours within months. It is the most common damage, and the most irreversible.
3. Away from radiators. Heat softens gels and leaves the surface tacky.
4. Separated by material. A gel left in prolonged contact with a foam can transfer its colour. Gels with gels, foams with foams.
5. Dusted regularly. Foam catches dust on the surface, and once it is ingrained it will not come off. A dry cloth every couple of weeks is enough — the full method is in our care guide.

The bag squishy and the shelf squishy

A well-thought-out collection separates two uses. There are the squishies that live — the one in your bag, the one in your pencil case, the one on your desk, handled every day and destined to wear out. And there are the squishies you look at — the large formats, the rarer models, the ones you keep in good condition.

For everyday use, favour gel: it survives the bottom of a bag where foam tears. For the shelf, large slow-rise pieces are unbeatable visually.

Leaving room for surprise

What keeps a collection alive is not choosing all of it. Random-colour models such as the mystery dumpling add a genuine collecting dimension: you do not know which one you will get, and some versions are rarer than others. It is also the best way to avoid buying the same thing twice.

Common questions

How many squishies make a collection? There is no threshold. Three well-chosen textures beat ten identical models.

How long does a squishy last? A well-kept gel lasts years. PU foam handled every day tires within months — it gradually loses its slow return. That is normal, not a defect.

Can you mix brands? Of course. The only precaution is not to leave coloured gels in prolonged contact with pale foams.
