Slow rise squishies: why they feel so good (and how to choose one)
Share
If you have ever pressed a slow-rise squishy, you know the oddly soothing feeling: the foam collapses under your fingers, then swells back very gently, as if in slow motion. Why has this simple effect become a global ASMR phenomenon? And how do you spot a good "slow rising" squishy? Here are the answers.
How does slow rise work?
A slow-rise squishy is made from open-cell polyurethane (PU) foam. When you press it, air escapes from the thousands of tiny cells in the foam. When you let go, the air gradually finds its way back in: that is what creates the slow, steady swelling that is so satisfying to watch.
The denser the foam and the finer the cells, the slower and creamier the return. The best models take 5 to 10 seconds to recover their full shape.
Why our brains love it
- The gesture-reward loop. Press → watch → repeat: this short, predictable loop has an immediate calming effect, rather like bubble wrap.
- A rhythm that invites you to slow down. The slow swelling acts like a metronome: without thinking about it, you match your breathing to the squishy.
- A motor outlet. Busy hands work off accumulated tension — handy in a meeting, during revision or on a commute.
- Pure sensory pleasure. A soft texture, mouth-watering designs, sometimes a faint sweet scent: slow rise ticks every box of the simple small pleasure.
What makes a good slow-rise squishy
1. The slowness of the return
A quality squishy swells back smoothly, without jerking. Models like the giant donut or the giant brioche milk bread are picked for their especially slow return.
2. Surface softness
The best squishies have a slightly powdery or silky feel. That is the case with the toast, whose surface genuinely echoes the crumb of bread.
3. Durable seams and paint
A squishy gets crushed thousands of times: the paint has to stay flexible and well bonded. We test our references before listing them — and if a product disappoints you, our 14-day satisfaction guarantee applies.
4. A size that fits your use
Mini (pocket, pencil case): mini kawaii cat. Standard (adult hand): cookie, watermelon. Giant (desk, decor, two-handed squeezing): jumbo banana, giant milk carton. The whole large format range is in Giant Squishy.
Slow rise, quick rebound or gel: which to choose?
It depends on your sensory profile. If you like to press and watch, slow rise is your best ally. If you would rather knead restlessly, a quick-rebound gel such as the transparent mochi will suit you better. The two complement each other well — which is why our packs often mix textures.
Making your slow-rise squishy last
- Avoid water: PU foam soaks it up like a sponge.
- Keep it away from heat sources and direct sun (the foam yellows).
- Do not pierce it with your nails: press with the pads of your fingers.
- Clean it dry or with a barely damp cloth (see our complete care guide).
