What is a squishy? The complete beginner's guide
Share
You have seen the ASMR videos of hands pressing soft little bread rolls or hypnotic gel cubes, and you are wondering what exactly they are? Welcome to the world of the squishy, the sensory stress toy that became a global phenomenon. In this guide we cover the lot: materials, types, benefits, and how to choose yours.
So what is a squishy, exactly?
A squishy is a small, soft object designed to be pressed, kneaded and stretched… then return to its original shape. The name comes from to squish. Born in Japan out of kawaii culture, it has taken hold everywhere as a pocket-sized companion for restless hands: at a desk, in class, on public transport or on the sofa.
Unlike a plain foam ball, a squishy works on several senses at once: touch (soft, dense or tacky textures), sight (it swells back slowly, and pastel colours are calming) and sometimes even smell, as some models are lightly scented — like our scented giant milk carton.
The main families of squishy
1. Slow-rise PU foam
The great classic. Made from polyurethane foam, it compresses completely then returns to shape very slowly, over several seconds. That is the "slow rising" effect that makes these so satisfying to watch. Indulgent models like the giant brioche milk bread or the slow-rise cookie are perfect examples. They are all gathered in Slow Rise Squishy.
2. Gel squishies (TPR / jelly)
Denser and slightly elastic, a gel squishy deforms in every direction and springs straight back. That is the case with the transparent mochi or the jelly cat paw. Cool to the touch and thoroughly hypnotic.
3. Maltose and mochi
Halfway between modelling clay and gel, maltose stretches endlessly and can be kneaded without ever tearing. Mochi and maltose are ideal if you prefer working a material to pressing it. Special mention to our stretchy maltose axolotl, and to the whole Stretchy Squishy collection.
4. Fidget squishies
Built to keep hands busy: tongues that pop out, pop-up effects, beads to knead. Have a look at the pop-up mouse in its cheese or the mochi beads. They are all in the Sensory & Fidget collection.
Why do squishies feel so good?
- They give restless energy somewhere to go. The repeated pressing motion helps release the tension held in your hands.
- They invite you to slow down. Watching a squishy swell back naturally slows your breathing with it.
- They keep your hands busy so your mind is free. Plenty of people use one to stay attentive in a meeting, a lecture or a revision session.
- They make you smile. A pink axolotl or a frog-burger on your desk is a micro-dose of cheer every time you look up.
How to choose your first squishy
Do you like to press and watch? Go for slow-rise PU foam, like the toast.
Do you like endless kneading? Head for gel, with a transparent mochi.
Do you like stretching? Maltose is made for you.
Still undecided? Our discovery packs combine several textures at a gentle price — ideal for finding your favourite, or for giving as a gift.
Are squishies suitable for children?
Yes, generally from 3 years old — mini formats are not advised for younger children because of the swallowing risk. Every product page states the recommended age for that model. An adult remains the best judge for children who still put things in their mouths.
In short
A squishy is far more than a gadget: it is a simple, affordable and cheerful sensory tool for giving yourself pauses during the day. Start with a texture that appeals to you, let it surprise you… and be warned, people often start with one squishy and rarely stop there.
