The axolotl: how this little salamander became the star of kawaii

You cannot open TikTok, Minecraft or a shelf of soft toys without running into it: the axolotl, that little pink salamander with the eternal smile, has become the emblem animal of kawaii culture. But what is it really, and why is it so captivating? A portrait of an aquatic superstar.
A very real (and fascinating) animal
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a salamander native to the lakes of Xochimilco, in Mexico. Its most striking peculiarity: it spends its entire life in a larval state, a phenomenon known as neoteny. So it keeps its external gills for life — those famous feathery pink "antennae" framing its face.
Another superpower: the axolotl can regenerate its limbs, its tail, and even parts of its heart and brain. Scientists around the world study it for that unique ability.
The sad flip side: in the wild, the axolotl is critically endangered — its natural habitat shrinks year after year. Its global fame has at least one merit: it draws attention to its protection.
Why is it so kawaii?
Japanese kawaii follows precise codes: a big head, large eyes, round shapes, a gentle expression. The axolotl ticks every box naturally:
- Its permanent "smile" — the natural shape of its mouth makes it look perpetually delighted.
- Its pink gill-bunches — like the little bunches of a manga character.
- Its colour — the leucistic variety, pale pink with black eyes, looks straight out of a cartoon.
- Its floating walk — it "walks" underwater with irresistible nonchalance.
Add its arrival in Minecraft in 2021 and billions of views on TikTok, and you have the most meteoric kawaii rise of the decade.

- The name "axolotl" comes from Nahuatl, the Aztec language, and means "water monster" — surely the least frightening monster in history.
